The Austintown library will be providing fun for children all summer, and staff stopped by Lloyd Elementary on May 23 to give every student at the school a formal invitation to the party.

The theme for this year’s summer reading program will be “One World, Many Stories,” where the young readers will learn about world cultures, food and animals during library story times and events.

Children’s librarian Kathe Orr was on hand to talk to the students about summer reading and share some of the fun they will be experiencing when they visit the Austintown library. Each child will be given a summer reading “passport,” where they will list books they’d read or even stories they’ve listened to on tape.

The library has a list of prizes from community restaurants and organizations for reading hour milestones.

“It’s really important to read over the summer,” Orr shared at her presentation. “Continuing to practice your reading and learning more will keep you prepared for your next year in school.”

To give the students a taste of the stories and games they’ll be trying out this summer, Orr read the book “Zomo the Rabbit” by Gerald McDermott. The work was a classic “trickster” story originating from West Africa. Afterward, the students played a traditional Russian game where they had to spin fishing rods until a fish on the line met the rod.

“I hope you come visit me at the library this summer,” Orr said. “I know that the prizes we give out are really cool, but it’s also awesome to be reading and readying your little minds for lots of learning next year, too.”
