This year, Market Street Elementary is saying goodbye to five retiring teachers whose combined experience equals 179 years.

First-grade teacher Nancy Golubic offers 31 years to that total as she retires this school year. The South Euclid native attended Kent State University before deciding to settle in Boardman at the suggestion of sorority sisters. In her first post at Jackson-Milton schools, she taught kindergarten, second, and third grade, but has spent the last 21 teaching first grade in the Boardman schools.

“I love this grade because it is the time that most kids learn to read. No matter how long I’ve been teaching, it’s a miracle to see that light bulb go on. With this age, everything is so fresh and everything is exciting,” the teacher shared.

While she loves to teach reading, Golubic has found a great appreciation and interest in technology. She runs the Market Street website, as well as her own first-grade site for the students of her classroom, and was one of the first teachers at Market Street to use a SMART Board in her classroom.

“I integrate technology into my teaching as much as I can and I definitely think that it will continue to be an interest once I retire. I’ll still be running the website for Market Street, so will definitely still be around the school.“

Golubic said her plans after retiring are still up in the air. However, she admitted, “I want to learn to relax. I was never very good at that.”

She hopes to read more and possibly travel to Disney World or historical Williamsburg.

Still, Golubic isn’t sure her transition into retirement will be easy, but she also knows it’s necessary.

“Teaching has never been just my job. It’s my identity. I take it everywhere with me. I know it will be difficult, but I also know that it’s the right time to go,” she reflected.
