Four Girl Scout troops from Hilltop Elementary School came armed with gardening gloves, shovels, trowels and watering cans June 1 to plant flowers as a service project.
The troops enlisted the help of Bruce Ware, Hilltop’s custodial landscaper, to plant tulips, irises, firewitch and stargazer daylillies around the school.
“Service is a large part of being a Girl Scout. We thought serving our own school was a great opportunity for the girls to see how their service has helped improve their school. This idea came from our troop, but we wanted to extend the project to the other troops,” said Staci Wills, leader of Brownies Troop 498.
The troops all contributed money to purchase the plants. Borrowing Ware’s knowledge of landscaping as owner of Ware and Sons Landscaping and Lawn Care, Wills asked him to purchase the flowers he knew would flourish at the school.
Ware picked out the spots for the flowers, instructed the girls on how to plant each type of flower and then the girls dug in.
Participating members of Brownies Troop 498, led by Staci Wills and Micky Rosko, included Maddie Wills, Samantha Lutton, Morgan Prather, Grace Rosko, Hannah Kelly, Mikenzie Silvestri and Cassie Crawford.
Emma Bucheit, Claire Berlin, Clare Crescimanno, Mia Cayanec, Candice Kraykovich, Allysa Householder and Emily Yurchison, members of Junior Girl Scouts Troop 189, led by Mary Cohan and Christy Berlin, also helped with the planting project.
Junior Girl Scout Troop 261, led by Denise Joseph, Michelle Head and Becky Megown, was represented by Shelby Byrne, Marisa Head, Sophie Hodge, Nicole Joseph, Jessica Megown, Julia Petrallo, Autumn Sebastian, Emily Skovran, Lane Taylor, Britney Young and Madison Impton.
Members of Brownies Troop 358, Grace Henry, Tati Caballero and Alex Crans, led by Lisa Henry and Judy Shaffer, also participated in the planting.
Cathy Mowry, Hilltop Elementary School principal, made it a special point to visit the Girl Scouts during the planting and thanked them for their service.
