From the flag raising to the retiring of the flags, Canfield United Methodist Church’s Cub Scout Pack 25 enjoyed a day full of nature and nurturing at Camp Akela during Family Camp June 4.

This annual event brought together the families of the Pack to learn the way of the scouts.

The morning started with a work session and cleaning up the camp from winter’s toll. After a brief cool down, Scout Master Troy Homrighausen began the afternoon’s events with teaching the boys how to conduct a flag raising.

Then the games began, from teamwork to individual challenges, the boys and their siblings challenged themselves to the limit, ending with a series of tug of wars with the moms, dads and committee member Ed Wood and his pulley system.

While dinner was cooking, Homrighausen led the troop on a hike through Akela to Camp Stambaugh, with spectacular views into the woods and ravine along Indian Run.

The highlight of the day included building rockets. After dinner, the Scouts traveled over to the fairgrounds to shoot them off.

Wood led the rocket event and each scout was able to conduct a countdown and launch of his own rocket.

The event concluded with a flag retiring ceremony, campfire and s’mores.

Cub Scouting activities are open to boys in first through fifth grade. To join Pack 25 or for information, contact Troy or Stephanie Homrighausen at 330-533-1237 or visit www.scouting.org.
