Contracts OK’d for new Niles high school

The board of education awarded the general-trades contract for construction of the new McKinley High School to Mike Coates Construction Co. of Niles for $12.1 million.

The company was the second-lowest bidder. The original low bidder, Hudson Construction, Hermitage, Pa., withdrew.

Superintendent Rocco Adduci said Thursday that Hudson notified the district that its bid was incomplete because it failed to include several of the required specifications when the bids were advertised.

Another major contract of $5.5 million for heating, plumbing, ventilation and air conditioning was awarded to Conti Corp., Lowellville.

Other contracts awarded by the board for the new high school:

Roofing: Boak and Sons, Inc., Austintown, $865,290.

Food-service equipment: Burkett Restaurant Equipment, Toledo, $329,000

Cabinet casework: Southern Cabinetry Inc., Bidwell, Ohio, $447,700.

Fire protection: Brown Sprinkler Service Inc., Dorset, Ohio, $198,680.

The new school, a 123,000-square-foot complex, will have 27 academic classrooms along with other sections designed for art, instrumental and vocal music, and a gymnasium.

It has been designed to accommodate 675 students and is expected to be completed by September 2013 when the new school year begins.

The high school is one component of a $56 million building program that includes two new elementary schools.

Much of it was financed through funds provided by the Ohio School Facilities Commission with voters approving a $16 million bond issue to cover the local portion in 2009.
