Summer safety tips
COLUMBUS
Summer activities safety tips offered by The Ohio Department of Health include:
When cooking on the grill, use a meat thermometer to ensure meat and poultry are cooked thoroughly and place cooked meat on a clean platter rather than back on the one that held the raw meat to avoid cross-contamination.
Use insect repellent and wear protective clothing that covers the skin to prevent mosquito borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus. Remove discarded tires and water-holding containers.
To protect against skin cancer, avoid being outdoors during the midday, using sunscreen with at least SPF 30; cover up with clothing and wear a brimmed hat and wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays.
Use hearing protection devices and don’t use MP3 or other music-playing devices while using lawn mowers and chain saws.
While outdoors, have water on hand to decrease the chances of dehydration.
Supervise children while they are playing and make sure they wear proper safety equipment such as a life jacket or bike helmet.
