Police have charged brothers Derrick L. McCullough, 30, and Roy A. McCullough Jr., 28, with aggravated burglary and are waiting to take them into custody.
They are charged in a Sunday afternoon incident involving gunshots and a baseball bat on Brier Street Southeast.
Police say the two entered a house at 2145 Brier St. about 3:05 p.m. and were attempting to take a television set from the house when a man who lives there confronted them with a gun.
In the fight that ensued, Shawn T. Flowers, 44, was beaten, apparently with a baseball bat, and both of the McCulloughs were shot — Derrick in the legs and Roy in the stomach. Roy was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital, police said.
No charges have been filed against Flowers, who went to St. Joseph Health Center. Derrick McCullough went to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Sgt. Jeff Cole, spokesman for the Warren Police Department, said Derrick McCullough was supposed to be held at the hospital so that police could arrest him when he was well enough to be released, but he slipped away from the hospital, Cole said.
A 43-year-old woman living at 2145 Brier who made the 911 call regarding the McCullough brothers was not injured and not charged.
Police have said it appeared that the McCullough brothers, who live at another address on Brier Street Southeast, had gone to the home to collect money they felt was owed to them.
Cole said he doesn’t know how serious any of the three men’s injuries are, but he believes Roy McCullough might have been the most seriously injured.
Derrick McCullough was sentenced to two years in prison in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in 2001 after being convicted of felonious assault and burglary. He also was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2004 on charges of trafficking in cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
Flowers was sentenced to five years in prison in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in 2003 for possession and trafficking in heroin and cocaine.
Roy A. McCullough Jr. has no previous criminal record in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court or Warren Municipal Court.
