Oregon officer named Byrd rescues young hawk

PORTLAND, Ore.

It’s the kind of story that creates its own headline — Byrd Rescues Hawk.

Oregon’s KGW-TV reports that Portland Police Bureau officer Cage Byrd — his real name — spotted a young red-tailed hawk standing outside a downtown hair salon Tuesday.

The raptor chick appeared to be injured, so Byrd grabbed some towels and a box from a nearby hotel and took the hawk to a veterinary hospital.

The bird later was taken to the Audubon Society, which says the hawk probably fell from a nest near the KGW Audubon Raptor Cam. The remote camera records the activity of a raptor family and is shown on a website that has become popular.

One of the three chicks suffered a leg injury last week.

Box labeled ‘grandma’s urn’ left at Goodwill store

FENTON, Mich.

State police in Michigan are trying to find who left what appear to be a grandmother’s cremated remains in an urn at a Goodwill store near Flint.

Fenton Goodwill store manager Allen Ryckman says “it’s got to be the No. 1 or No. 2 weirdest item” the store ever has received. He says it appears to have come from a house that was cleaned out.

The Flint Journal says store workers found the box just before Easter.

The box has the label “grandma’s urn.”

The cream-colored urn is about 10 inches tall and weighs about 10 pounds. It doesn’t have any identifying marks or label.

The Michigan State Police Flint post asks anyone with information to call. Anyone with information may contact the Flint post at 810-732-1111.

Court: Detroit-area mayor can keep age private

WARREN, Mich.

The mayor of Michigan’s third-largest city doesn’t have to reveal his age.

The state appeals court entered the strange dispute recently by overturning a judge’s ruling that had required Jim Fouts to disclose his birthdate as he seeks re-election as Warren mayor in August.

The appeals court says it’s not required under Michigan law.

Fouts says the decision means age cannot be used as a “weapon of mass destruction.” He says his age is irrelevant.

Some records show he’s 66.

Three rivals have been trying to keep Fouts off the ballot over his failure to include his age on his candidacy form.
