New rules target sunscreen confusion

New rules target sunscreen confusion

WASHINGTON

Help is on the way if you’re confused by the maze of sun-protection numbers and other claims on sunscreens.

Starting next summer, you can start looking for SPF 15 bottles and tubes with the label “broad spectrum” and feel confident they’re lowering your risk of skin cancer.

Under new rules published Tuesday, sunscreens will have to filter out the most- dangerous type of radiation to claim they protect against skin cancer and premature aging. “Broad spectrum” describes a product that does an acceptable job blocking both ultraviolet B rays and ultraviolet A rays.

Ex-Utah governor to announce candidacy

MANCHESTER, N.H.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is joining the fast-growing pack of Republicans battling to take on President Barack Obama.

Huntsman, who was Obama’s ambassador to China until a month ago, will make his formal announcement Tuesday, his campaign team said. Though he served in Washington for three Republican presidents, he faces a challenge in making himself known nationally and winning over GOP primary voters.

Report: Students don’t know history

U.S. students don’t know much about American history.

Just 13 percent of high school seniors who took the 2010 National Assessment of Educational Progress, called the Nation’s Report Card, showed a solid grasp of the subject. Results released Tuesday showed the two other grades didn’t perform much better, with just 22 percent of fourth-grade students and 18 percent of eighth-graders demonstrating proficiency.

Boehner pressures Obama on Libya

WASHINGTON

House Speaker John Boehner urged President Barack Obama on Tuesday to explain the legal grounds for the continued U.S. military involvement in Libya and set a Friday deadline for the commander in chief’s response.

Ratcheting up the pressure, the Ohio Republican said in a letter to the White House that the administration clearly will be in violation of the 1973 War Powers Act this weekend. Obama did not seek congressional consent for the operation within 60 days of the March 19 U.S. airstrikes against Moammar Gadhafi’s forces.

Obama pays visit to Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

Wooing Hispanic voters back home Tuesday, President Barack Obama kept his campaign pledge to become the first president since John F. Kennedy to make an official visit to this recession- battered U.S. territory.

Puerto Ricans are an important component of the fast-growing Hispanic population in the U.S., now totaling 50 million, that Obama wants to mobilize in his re-election campaign.

Dems hope Weiner will quit on his own

WASHINGTON

House Democrats are counting on growing pressure from Rep. Anthony Weiner’s colleagues, a suggestion from the president and the return of Weiner’s pregnant wife from an overseas trip to persuade him to resign over a sexting scandal in which he sent lewd photos of himself and messages to several women. The House’s top Republican, Speaker John Boehner, joined the chorus of Democrats calling for the New York Democrat to quit. House Democrats went behind closed doors for their regular party meeting, but they decided against taking action against Weiner in hopes that he’ll resign soon.
