CANTON

The Greater Canton Writers’ Guild is accepting entries for its fiction and nonfiction writing contests through July 31.

Submissions must be 2,000 words or less, and subject matter and genre are at the writer’s discretion.

The winner in each contest will receive $50, and the story will be published on the Guild’s website for a year.

Former reporter writes crime novel

WESTERVILLE, OHIO

Robin Yocum, a former Columbus Dispatch reporter, is announcing the release of his first novel, “Favorite Sons,” by Arcade Publishing.

He has written two true-crime books, “Dead Before Deadline ... and other tales from the police beat,” from University of Akron Press, 2004, which highlights his four years as crime reporter for the Dispatch; and “Insured for Murder” by Prometheus Books, 1992, about a murder-for-insurance scam that he and co-author Catherine Candisky covered for the Dispatch.

Yocum has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University.

He worked for the Dispatch for 11 years, six of them as senior reporter on the investigative desk. He has won numerous journalism awards.

Nobel Prize winner writing memoir

NEW YORK

Mohamed ElBaradei, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2005, is writing a memoir about his 12 years as head of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency, including the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Metropolitan Books, an imprint of Henry Holt and Co., will release “Crawling Away from Armageddon” this year. In it, ElBaradei will write about the U.S. war against Iraq and will include his observations of Bush administration officials including Dick Cheney and Colin Powell.
