ODOT leader: Leasing turnpike would benefit northern Ohio

Ohio might get several billion dollars if it leases the Ohio Turnpike, and an official says most of the money would go toward projects in the northern part of the state, where the 241-mile toll road is located.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports Department of Transportation Director Jerry Wray defends the lease idea amid growing opposition in the region. Wray says a lease deal could limit toll increases, provide for maintenance and help fund projects that otherwise wouldn’t be finished.

He says Republican Gov. John Kasich wants to lease the roadway but ensure the deal benefits Ohio.

Some area leaders worry that having a private operator for the turnpike could create other problems.

Ohio lawmakers are working on a two-year budget that could allow for a lease deal.
