A man was injured after a grease fire got out of control, the fire department said.

The department said the fire happened at 1:55 p.m. Saturday as the victim was cooking in an upstairs apartment at 5 W. Laurel Ave.

Nicholas Paglialong tried to take the pan that caught fire outside, the department said, but dropped it in the hallway when it got too hot. It caught the hallway on fire.

Paglialong suffered first- and second-degree burns on his hands and legs. He was taken to Jameson Hospital, the department said.

The fire caused about $50,000 in loss to the house and contents, the department said.

The upstairs apartment also was damaged, and the downstairs apartment had smoke and water damage. A resident was home in the downstairs apartment at the time. There were no other injuries.
