Health-care event set at Salvation Army

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

“Getting Your Health On,” a major event for the aged, blind and disabled of Mahoning County, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave.

It is sponsored by UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement Solutions, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, ACTION, Youngstown Minority Health, The Salvation Army, Ohio State Nutrition Extension Program and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

The event will focus on the positive effects of good nutrition and healthy living.

Due to limited resources and community connections, the aged, blind and disabled often find themselves at a heightened risk of diseases caused by poor nutrition.

The goal is to educate those in the focus group about eating well and fostering a lifestyle that embraces colorful food, creativity in the kitchen, eating with friends and exercise.

Included in the free event is a lunch-time presentation by Dr. Terrie Rich, owner of the Natural Health and Wellness Center of Hubbard, who will discuss the benefits of alternative medicine such as acupuncture and nutrition.

Other activities include healthy-food demonstrations, nutritional bingo, Zumba (a dance/aerobic exercise), and a Wii bowling tournament.

There will be educational venues on Medicare, Medicaid and diabetes provided by area agencies. Also provided are opportunities to make community connections and accessing resources such as housing, dental and Help Hotline.
