AUSTINTOWN

The 2011 Austintown Relay for Life was a success in a variety of ways, including the number of survivors who were served dinner and who participated in the event.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s annual fundraising event to raise money for cancer research and education.

Jennifer Weaver of North Jackson, 2011 Austintown chairperson, said the event, at Austintown Fitch High School Friday and Saturday, raised $93,726. That is higher than the amount raised by this time in 2010.

Weaver said she expects the relay’s goal of $106,000 will be reached in the weeks to come, as funds continue to arrive.

This year’s Austintown relay featured 23 people who walked the relay for 24 hours, called Iron Man Walkers. Weaver said 150 survivors were served dinner. There were 24 teams who put up tents at the relay and four teams with no tent at the relay.

“We had a lot of participation and a lot of community support,” Weaver said.
