Flag disposal

CANFIELD

On Flag Day, Tuesday, AMVETS Post 44 and the Mahoning Veterans Memorial are conducting a flag disposal ceremony at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial on the Canfield Fairgrounds at 5 p.m.

Flags can be dropped off any time at the memorial. Also, people who have helped with the flag-disposal unit and Boy Scouts who have helped with the program will be recognized. For more information, call 330-533-1522.

American Legion Post 247 installed 2011-12 officers at a recent installation dinner. The officers are commander, Everett Oliver; first vice commander, Roy Oliver; second vice commander, Robert Renninger; finance officer and chaplain, Vince Bellanca; sergeant-at-arms, Sam Tullio; service officer, Lloyd Edwards; and adjutant, Gerald Ferencak.

Tuition assistance

YOUNGSTOWN

July 1 is the deadline for children of deceased veterans or veterans receiving 60 percent to 100 percent Veterans Affairs service connected disability compensation, who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war, to apply for college-tuition assistance through the Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Program.

Combat duties are not required. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled for full-time undergraduate study at an eligible Ohio college or university and be Ohio residents under the age of 25. Newly commissioned

Navy Ensign Erin M. Reinke, daughter of Mary A. and William L. Reinke of Jefferson, was commissioned recently upon graduation from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit at the University of Notre Dame, Ind. She is a 2007 graduate of Jefferson Area High School.

Legion of Merit

Air Force Brig. Gen. James J. Muscatell, assigned to the Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., recently was awarded the Legion of Merit with Second Oak Leaf Cluster.

A commander with 33 years of military service, Muscatell, the son of Jim and Peggy Muscatell of Struthers, received a bachelor’s degree in 1979 from the Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in 2007 from Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn.
