By May 24, the students in Joy Bucci’s Union Preschool classroom were already gearing up for their preschool graduation and field day. With so many important events on the horizon, Bucci and her assistant teacher, Judy Greene, decided to create their own special holiday to keep the focus on the classroom.
The morning of May 24 then officially became Teddy Bear Day at the preschool.
“It’s the end of the year and things are wrapping up and there really are no more holidays to celebrate. We work hard to think of fun events that the kids can relate to and celebrate even during the last week of school,” Bucci said of their new holiday.
Teddy Bear Day began with the students bringing in their own stuffed animals from home. They worked on bear art projects, sang songs about bears with their stuffed animals in hand and ate a snack of Teddy Grahams and juice.
The students also learned about real-life bears, and studied where they live, what they eat and what they look like.
“If the kids learned anything this year, I hope they found that any day can be special if you make it that way. We hope they’ll create their own holidays during the summer and beyond,” Bucci shared.
