During a visit from Auntie Anne’s Pretzels to Dobbins Elementary, a video the company showed to the school’s kindergartners said that the first pretzel was rumored to be rolled by an Italian monk in 610 A.D.

On May 24, the kindergartners joined the ranks of 1,400 years of pretzel makers when Auntie Anne’s made the kids official pretzel twisters for the day.

The project for the kindergartners has been held at Dobbins for the last 10 years and kindergarten teacher Elaine Fabrizi appreciates the project because it makes science fun.

“We’ve been teaching the students about nutrition during this year, and understanding how things are made is an important part of that. I also think the kids learn a lot about their senses, being able to see, feel, and smell the dough,” Fabrizi noted.

Auntie Anne’s representatives Jenn Gimmell and Greg DeAngelo were on hand to teach the students how to make a perfect pretzel, which included stretching and twisting the dough into it’s familiar shape.

For the sake of time, Gimmell and DeAngelo took the kindergartners’ dough and served them fresh, warm pretzels they brought from their own store.

“Messing with the dough was cool, but eating the pretzels is definitely the best part,” student Alyssa Glaros admitted while chewing her treat.

For the Auntie Anne’s representatives, meeting the kids was their favorite aspect of the event.

“I’m on vacation this week, but I was happy to give my time to come to Dobbins and meet the kindergartners here,” Gimmell shared.
