Catholic war vets award scholarships to students

St. Stanislaus Post 1222 of the Catholic War Veterans hosted its 55th annual awards breakfast May 15 after the 10:30 a.m. mass at St. Stanislaus Church hall.

Father Edward Neroda opened the breakfast with prayer. Dennis Wilde, past CWV state commander, was the Master of Ceremonies.

Third Vice Commander Philip Markovitz coordinated the essay contest in the area’s parochial schools. Deacon Michael Schlais of Cardinal Mooney High School judged more than 300 essays entered. This year’s essay theme was “What does Patriotism mean to me?”

Markovitz presented awards to the following students: Scott McHenry, Michael Jones, Gina Greenaway, Nick Armeni, Michaelina Appugliese, Emily Wainio, Lukasz Witkowski, Emilly Burnham, Courtney Unger, Amanda Yarger, Michael Chizmar, Anthony Gresko and Prajit Khooblall.

CWV Auxiliary President Barbara Kuras presented gifts to the high school graduates of St. Stanislaus Parish — Brian Lawson and Alex Mickler.

Post 1222 has given more than $72,000 in awards to local students over the years.

Neroda, pastor of St. Stanislaus Church and chaplain of Post 1222, expressed his gratitude to all present and to the Ladies Auxiliary for breakfast.
