FARRELL/GREENVILLE, Pa.
UPMC Horizon recently recognized three residents from its graduate medical education program. They are: Drs. Lee Farber and Stephen Bayuk, who completed a general surgery residency, and Dr. William Thorpe, who is scheduled to complete an internal medicine residency Dec. 31. Residents completing their first year of training at UPMC Horizon selected Dr. Paul Lange as “Teaching Physician of the Year.”
Feeding the hungry

The Mahoning Valley community raised $128,308 and collected over 34,000 pounds of food to feed people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties through Second Harvest Food Bank’s annual Harvest for Hunger in March and April. Campaign sponsors were 21 WFMJ-TV & WBCB, The Vindicator, Giant Eagle and UFCW Local 880. Individuals gave donations of food and funds at supermarket sponsor Giant Eagle and at several Sparkle Markets.
Hyperbaric oxygen

UPMC Horizon is offering hyperbaric oxygen services through its Center for Wound Treatment, now known as the UPMC Horizon Center for Wound Treatment and Hyperbaric Medicine. As a result of adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy to its list of services, the UPMC Horizon Center for Wound Treatment has consolidated its outpatient clinic at 2120 Likens Lane, Farrell. However, wound- care staff continues to offer inpatient consultations at UPMC Horizon’s hospital campuses in Farrell and Greenville. For more information, call 724-983-7970.

A new medical treatise on emerging surgery techniques for the foot and ankle includes a chapter written by Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, managing partner at Ankle & Foot Care Centers here.
“Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle,” a 456-page orthopedic textbook, a valuable resource for physicians, includes Dr. DiDomenico’s “Percutaneous Calcaneal Displacement Osteotomy,” which explains a technique that realigns the calcaneous (heel) to improve function and eliminate pain in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
The book is published by Springer Publishing and is available online from Springer and Amazon.
Summer Games
COLUMBUS
Special Olympics Ohio’s State Summer Games, the largest event of the year on the Special Olympics Ohio calendar, is June 24-26 at The Ohio State University, said Bob Rickard, executive director of Special Olympics Ohio.
The first Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games at Ohio State involved 300 athletes. This year, more than 2,600 athletes from 66 of Ohio’s 88 counties are training for the 2011 competition and for the opportunity to earn medals in 11 events including aquatics, athletics (track and field), boccie, bowling, cycling, gymnastics, power lifting, roller skating, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
