ACS free class for cancer patients

The American Cancer Society is offering a free class for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers called “I Can Cope,” which focuses on nutrition after treatment.
The class is on June 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Northside Medical Center in Politis Auditorium on the ground floor of the Medical Education Building at 500 Gypsy Lane.
Debbie Gilbert, a licensed dietician at Northside, will present nutrition information, and Northside’s Chef Steve Surack will provide a food demonstration.

Funding conference Thursday at Oakhill

The Youngstown Offices of Minority Heath Youngstown City Health District are offering a funding conference on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave.
Presenters include Nita Carter and Shaun Tucker of Universal Health Care Action Network of Ohio and Dr. Betty Yung of Wright State University’s Research and Evaluation Enhancement Program.

Fundraiser set for Special Olympics

The Mahoning County Developmental Disabilities Special Olympics is having a fundraiser at Inner Circle Pizza of Poland from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday featuring two celebrity bartenders: Jack Gruber, a MCDD board member and a Special Olympics basketball coach, and Larry Duck, superintendent of the MCDD board.
Bar tips will go to the MCDD Special Olympics.
Other fundraising activities will include a gift basket and 50/50 raffles.

Rabies vaccinations for cats, dogs, ferrets
NEW MIDDLETOWN
The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the New Middletown Fire Department, 10711 Main St.
No appointment is necessary. The cost is $4.
The clinic is sponsored by the Mahoning County District Board of Health in partnership with Dr. Lisa Kurtz and East Park Veterinary Clinic of Columbiana.
Safe Driver series for seniors, kids
Shepherd of the Valley, the Chevy All Stars, The Senior News, and AAA are offering a free summer series of Safe Driver programs for seniors and their children.
The four-program series will be once each month June through September.
“Tips for Senior Drivers,” which addresses physical changes, making the car better fit the driver, and driving devices, is on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave. (330-544-0771, ext. 0); and June 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. George Church, 271 W. “Tips for Children and Families of Senior Drivers will be in July, and “AAA Safe Driving for Mature Operators,” for which there is a fee, will be in August, with times and locations to be announced at a later date.
