13 area softball players named All-Ohio
Poland’s Erin Gabriel (22) not only pitched but helped to hit the Bulldogs to a 14-2 win over the Tippecanoe Red Devils in the Division II state softball semifinal game Thursday at Akron Firestone Stadium. Gabriel matched teammate Jenna Modic with two doubles and a homer, except Gabriel’s three-run shot in the second inning was part of a five RBIgame. Poland faces LaGrange Keystone on Saturday in the state title game.

State champions Erin Gabriel, Jenna Modic and Lindsay Swipas have been selected to the first team on the Softball Coaches All-Ohio Team.
Gabriel and Modic, both juniors, led Poland to the Division II state title as the Bulldogs defeated LaGrange Keystone 4-0 on Saturday at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
Gabriel, who has committed to Tennessee, finished the season with a 16-1 record on the mound while Modic, the Bulldogs’ regular third baseman, compiled a 9-1 pitching record for the All-American Conference Red Tier champions. Modic has committed to Miami (Ohio).
Also on Saturday, Swipas, a junior, pitched Champion to the Div. III crown with an 11-1 victory over Baltimore Liberty Union. Swipas finished the year with an 18-0 record for the unbeaten AAC Blue Tier champions (27-0).
Adriana Sikora, Poland’s senior right fielder, received honorable mention honors in Div. II.
Tawny Rogers, Champion’s senior shortstop, was named to the Div. III second team as was Lisbon senior pitcher Lauren Ketchum.
In the state title game, Rogers had three triples including two in Champion’s 10-run outburst in the fifth inning. Rogers has several scholarship offers but has not made a decision about college.
Receiving honorable mention honors for Div. III were Mooney senior pitcher Jamie Clausen and Lisbon senior infielder Jamie Clausen.
In Div. I, Fitch junior outfielder Megan Carney was named to the second team.
Jackson-Milton sophomore pitcher Paije Kiraly and Southington junior outfielder Rebecca Wolke led the Mahoning Valley‘s Div. IV players with first team honors.
Columbiana junior first baseman Katie Libb was named to the second team while Western Reserve senior outfielder Maggie Stubbs was named honorable mention.
