Probe into fatal crash continues

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating a crash that killed two men Tuesday morning.
Troopers said a 1993 Honda Civic driven by Jose L. Mateo, 25, of Boardman, was traveling north on Glenwood Avenue when it went off the right side of the road, became airborne and hit a tree. Mateo and his passenger, Dale W. Ross Jr., 21, of Struthers, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports. The crash occurred on Glenwood Avenue, just north of Shields Road, about 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Plans announced for soldier’s funeral

Funeral arrangements are finalized for Staff Sgt. Edward Mills Jr., who was killed in Afghanistan on May 26.
Mills, 29, of New Castle, died of wounds suffered after an attack in Kandahar province, military officials said.
He was a member of the Army’s 101st Airborne Ranger Pathfinders on his third tour of duty in the Middle East and a 2000 graduate of Union High School.
Calling hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St., New Castle. Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Bank robber gets 4-year prison term

Although the prosecution recommended a two-year sentence for a Boardman bank robber, a judge deemed that insufficient.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Brandon J. Schmitt, 40, of Boardman to four years in prison.
Schmitt pleaded guilty April 6 to taking more than $5,000 from First National Bank, 7025 Market St., on Jan. 13. U.S. marshals arrested Schmitt at a motel in Moon Township, Pa., on Jan. 21.
