Death ruled homicide

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has ruled Friday’s death of Adrian Johnson, 38, of East Boston Avenue, a homicide, after a Monday autopsy by Dr. Joseph S. Ohr, forensic pathologist and deputy coroner.

Johnson died instantly of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, the coroner ruled. He was pronounced dead after the car he was driving crashed at 2:38 p.m. into a porch ramp and a tree in the 100 block of St. Louis Avenue on the city’s South Side, police said.

Flag disposal

American Legion Post 301 is having a U.S. flag burning/disposal ceremony Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park at Wickliffe Circle off Mahoning Avenue. The ceremony is open to all who have flags in need of disposal.

Celebration of arts

Youngstown State University’s Student Literary Arts Association will host a summer celebration of the arts from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lemon Grove Caf .

Featured readers will be Youngstown’s Karen Schubert who will be reading from her book “Bring Down the Sky” as well as Dr. Robert Miltner of Kent State University who will be reading from his latest poetry collection “Queen Mab and the Moon Boy.”

An open mic will follow. The Lemon Grove Caf is at 122 W. Federal Plaza in downtown Youngstown.

Road construction

LISBON

Construction begins Mondayto build a new access road and parking lot for Hellbender Bluff Park in Columbiana County, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The park is off county Road 425 near the intersection of the Old Lincoln Highway in Madison Township.

One lane for traffic will be maintained at all times during construction. The 712-acre park was opened to the public in 2010. It is home to the endangered Hellbender salamander and is the site of reforestation efforts.

ODOT is performing the federally funded project for the Columbiana County Park District. The contractor for the $124,546 project is Tucson Inc. of New Philadelphia, and the completion date is Aug. 31.

Salvation Army camp

Newton Falls

The Newton Falls Salvation Army Unit is prepared to send kids ages 6-12 to Camp NEOSA (North East Ohio Salvation Army) from July 8-13.

The Salvation Army needs campers, however. Those who want their child to attend should pick up an application at The Church Mouse Thrift Shop, 261/2 W. Broad St.

The children go to camp and back on a chartered bus, and there is no cost. The camp is fully accredited. Camp NEOSA is located near Carrollton on the Leesville Lake Reserve. Call Doug at The Church Mouse for more information at 330-872-5570 and pick up the applications as soon as possible.
