Safety ride is set for Saturday

Staff report

CORTLAND

The sixth annual North Coast Motorcycle Safety Ride, which will include Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The ride, designed to promote motorcycle safety and awareness, began in 2005 after 10 motorcyclists were killed in Ashtabula County. The safety ride is a partnership among the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Motorcycle Ohio, Safe Communities and University Hospitals. Proceeds benefit Safe Communities in each county.

The ride will feature two starting points — Lakeside High School, 6600 Sanborn Road, Ashtabula, and Bike Town Harley Davidson, 5700 Interstate Boulevard, Austintown. Both groups will meet at Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland.

Riders will return to the high school for festivities, safety displays and food. The ride will be escorted by law-enforcement officers.

Riders can register at the two starting points from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Both groups of riders will depart at 11 a.m.

The highway patrol reminds car drivers that a motorcycle is a motor vehicle with all the privileges of any vehicle on the roadway and should be given a full lane of travel.
