Doctors

OSU residency planned

Emily Pennington, daughter of Eleanor and Carl Pennington, granddaughter of Mary Pennington and the late Gerald Pennington and the late Evelyn and Lewis Volpe, graduated Thursday from Ohio State College of Medicine in Columbus. She will complete her medical residency in internal medicine at the university.

Dr. Pennington is a 2002 graduate of Boardman High School and 2006 graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where she earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology.

LaWYERS

Cum laude graduate

Andrea Rose Ball, a 2003 graduate of Hubbard High School and 2007 graduate of John Carroll University, and the daughter of JoAnn Vargo Ball, has graduated cum laude from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland.

While at Case, Ball was named to the Dean’s List each semester, and was an executive articles editor for the Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law.

Her piece, “Equal Accessibility for Sign Language Under the Convention For the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” is being published in the Journal’s forthcoming issue. She was recently selected as the first-place winner in the Hofstra University School of Law 2011 Family Law Writing Competition.

Ball has accepted an offer for an associate position with Thompson Hine LLP in Cleveland. She is the granddaughter of Rose Vargo and the late John Vargo and Willa “Noots” Ball, all of Hubbard.

DOCTORATE

Pharmacy degree

Antoni Skevos Zembillas of Campbell has received his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Toledo, where he was the recipient of the Cindy Puffer Externship Award.

He is a 2004 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and graduated magna cum laude in 2007 from UT, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences.

Zembillas has accepted a residency position at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is the son of Skevos and Despina Zembillas and grandson of Stanley and Anna Frangopoulos, all of Campbell, and Sevamia Zembillas and the late Antoni S. Zembillas of Greece.

SCOUTS

Eagle award

Cole Robert Palmer, son of Robert and Shari Palmer of Mineral Ridge, recently received the Eagle Scout Award.

Cole is a member of Troop 4089 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints in Liberty, Greater Western Reserve Council of the Arrowhead District. He joined Boy Scouts in 2006, earning 21 merit badges and has had various leadership positions.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Cole orchestrated a blood drive, suggested by Dr. Paul McPherson of Akron Children’s Hospital. Christina Gargas, a Red Cross donor recruitment representative, helped coordinate the project. The blood drive doubled Cole’s goal, bringing in 60 donors and collecting 40 pints of blood. The drive also brought in 19 first-time donors.

Graduating second in his class at Mineral Ridge High School, Cole was the president of National Honor Society, The Beta Club, and also president of his early morning seminary class for his church group. He was also the captain of Mineral Ridge’s cross country and track teams.

He received an appointment by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and was accepted into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., on a full scholarship. He is the grandson of John and Geri Tomko of Canfield and Ed and Patricia Palmer of Austintown.
