Senior center offers new programs

The Austintown Senior Center at 100 Westchester Drive will start new programs in June.

On Tuesdays at 10 a.m., seniors can join a discussion group where observations, opinions and memories can be shared. This is an opportunity for seniors to voice their thoughts about an array of subjects. Bill Adams, center director, will lead the discussion and a book will be chosen for discussion on the last Tuesday of the month.

Wellness Monday is June 13. Health care providers will be on hand to offer free screenings and answer healthcare questions. The purpose of the event is to provide seniors an opportunity to discover any problems early and make an appointment with their doctor to follow up.

Other service providers that play a part in keeping seniors healthy and well-informed are all encouraged to contact the center and become a part of the wellness program.

Seniors wanting to brush up on their Wii skills will have an opportunity to do so Wednesdays and Fridays at noon. The Austintown Senior Center Wii championship team will be available to help and coach those wanting to try for the championship at the center’s next Wii tournament.

There will be an outdoor walking group Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 9 a.m. in the parking lot (weather permitting). Those wishing to get a “move on” can start out in the Beginner Group at a slow pace and work up to the Intermediate Group that will eventually walk to the high school for a morning workout on the track.

Participants should check with their doctor before initiating any exercise program.

Computers are available for those who have some experience and wish to practice their skills. Staff is available to answer some questions and give a little help where needed. Formal classes will start in July. Both beginner and intermediate classes are planned.

The center offers Yoga, Senior Shape Up, Line Dancing and Zumba exercise classes. All these are morning classes. Bingo games, card games, lunch and socialization happen daily.

Anyone wanting to volunteer time for bake sales, outings or fundraisers should speak to the senior center staff.
