Students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and Mrs. Ritter’s kindergarten class at Market Street Elementary, capped off their year-long partnership with a day of fun at MCCTC May 17.
The kindergarten students visited MCCTC for the first time and were treated to tours of several programs, arts and crafts projects and lunch. Whether they were donning scrubs in the Medical Occupations Program or jumping into a Medevac helicopter while visiting the Aviation Program, students were able to experience what it’s like to be enrolled in the different programs at MCCTC. Students visited the Aviation, Interactive Multimedia and Medical Occupations Programs and met with School Resource Officer Ryan.
Once the tours were over, the students took part in story time and arts and crafts. Each of the arts and crafts projects represented one of the programs they visited earlier in the day. Outfitted with their chef hats, airplanes, nurse caps and police officer hats, the students were then treated to a lunch.
This visit marks the end of the first year of partnership for these two classrooms. MCCTC students began visiting Ritter’s classroom last fall, preparing lesson plans and activities for each visit. The partnership was created by Career Development Supervisor Jacqueline Kuffel who saw an opportunity for MCCTC students to gain new, valuable experiences in a real-world setting.
“This program is a good learning experience for both sets of students. My children love it — and for the MCCTC students, it gives them a good reality of what the classroom will be like,” Ritter said.
