The end of the school year usually means saying goodbye to school friends, teachers and the usual school routine.
This year for six students from Austintown Fitch and Boardman High School, there’s an air of excitement that’s usually not apparent. These students, along with exchange coordinator, Sieglinde Warren, will be visiting Germany for 10 days.
Students will visit their German friends, who came to the U.S. over the Thanksgiving holiday and stayed in their homes.
This summer, from June 15-25, students will visit Hennef, Germany, to stay in the homes of students they hosted this past fall. Hennef is located on the Rhine River in west central Germany, near Cologne.
The German hosts have planned many activities for their American guests. Among these activities are an all-day trip via plane to Berlin; a Rhine cruise which includes visiting a medieval castle; a trip to Cologne as well as to Bonn, the former German capital and birthplace of Beethoven.
In addition, the students will have the opportunity to visit their hosts’ German high school as the school year in Europe extends well into June.
This is the sixth year the exchange with the Gesamtschule in Hennef has taken place. A seventh exchange is planned with the same school this November with the German students arriving for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Students who host German guests and would like to travel to Germany will do so in June 2012.
Those Boardman and Austintown families interested in being part of the November 2011 exchange can contact Sieglinde Warren at suwarren19@zoominternet.net for information.
