Trumbull County athletes win five state track titles
COLUMBUS
The first day of the 2011 state track and field meet was a big one for Trumbull County as four athletes took home five state titles.
McDonald senior Matthias Tayala started his day by winning a Division III crown in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 64 feet, 8 inches, then topped himself a few hours later by breaking the state meet record in the discus with a throw of 196-3.
Mineral Ridge senior Dan Skiba broke the overall Division III record in the long jump with a leap of 24-5 1/4 to win his second state title in three years. Skiba, a YSU recruit, also won as a sophomore.
LaBrae senior Andre Elkins won the Division II long jump title.
On the girls side, Maplewood senior Jordan Moxley won the Division III high jump title for the second straight year. Moxley finishes her career with two outdoor state titles, two indoor state titles (high jump as a sophomore and a senior) and one Division II swimming title (in the 50 free, which she accomplished this winter).
