DeNiro quits race for treasurer
YOUNGSTOWN
Roxanne DeNiro, a candidate for Mahoning County treasurer, is no longer in the race.
DeNiro quit because of an illness in the family.
This leaves three candidates: Daniel R. Yemma of Struthers, Kenneth A. Carano of Austintown and Paul J. Canter of Poland.
The county Democratic Party precinct committee members will appoint a new treasurer at a meeting Monday. The appointee will fill the remainder of ex-Treasurer Lisa Antonini’s term, which expires in September 2013.
County advertising in state magazine
YOUNGSTOWN
Mahoning County commissioners bought a full-page, outside back-cover, four-color advertisement in the June issue of Ohio magazine to promote summer activities in the county.
From county hotel bed-tax revenue, they paid $3,500, which is 55 percent below the rate-card price, obtaining the bargain due to a last-minute cancellation by another advertiser, said Phil Moore, county Convention and Visitors’ Bureau director.
Also on Thursday, the commissioners appointed Gary G. O’Nesti of Boardman to the seven-member county board of developmental disabilities to complete the unexpired term of Tim Wolfgang, which runs through December 2012. Wolfgang resigned for health reasons last December.
Rabies vaccination clinic scheduled
New Middletown
Mahoning County District Board of Health is sponsoring a rabies-vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets from 2 to 5 p.m. June 11 at New Middletown Fire Department, 10711 Main St.
No appointment is necessary. Cost is $4. Pet owners must have their pets on a leash, in a cage or carried in a pillowcase.
Rabies is a deadly disease transmitted in animal saliva. Bites and scratches from unvaccinated pets and stray animals could cause human exposures to rabies, said Matthew Stefanak, county health commissioner.
The clinic is sponsored by the health board in partnership with Dr. Lisa Kurtz and East Park Veterinary Clinic, Columbiana.
Conveyeor-belt fire causes damage
BRACEVILLE
A company working inside the former Denman Tire factory on Diehl South Road accidentally caught a conveyor belt on fire early Thursday, causing around $100,000 in damage.
Newton Falls Fire District Fire Chief Rick Bauman said the 8:30 a.m. fire did not cause any injuries, but it required 10 departments to extinguish.
The fire spread from the conveyor belt on a catwalk to about 150 feet of plywood in the ceiling.
The company that started the fire was removing equipment and other salvageable materials from the plant at the time of the fire, Bauman said.
The company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in March 2010.
