Sentencing delayed

Sentencing delayed

CLEVELAND

Kevin L. Harris, 46, of Warren, who was expected to go to prison in March for engineering a $20 million Ponzi scheme, will remain free even longer.

Last week, his attorney, Gilbert Rucker of Warren, received a continuance of Harris’ sentencing hearing. That pushes the date back from Tuesday to sometime in July or later.

Rucker filed a motion with Judge Lesley Wells of U.S. District Court in Cleveland asking for a delay of 45 days or more so that he could review more than 400 pages of victim-impact statements Rucker received from the court’s Pretrial Services Department on May 11.

Judge Wells had nearly completed Harris’ sentencing hearing in March when she was informed that the court’s probation department informed her that it had not yet received statements from about 100 of the victims of the scheme. Judge Wells said she would not sentence Harris until after she had read the statements.
