YOUNGSTOWN

City police are investigating multiple acts of felonious assault that took place throughout the city over the past holiday weekend.

A 22-year-old Saranac Avenue man is recovering in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the stomach on the North Side early Monday. The man was taken to the hospital by a relative but was in surgery and unable to give police details concerning the shooting.

The victim’s brother told police he was in bed at the family home on Saranac when he heard about 30 gunshots and went outside to find his brother on the ground, shot in the stomach. He said his brother said, “I’m hit,” and asked for help.

Another family member told police she saw several people jump from nearby bushes when the shots were fired and run away on foot. No arrests have been made.

A woman on Kensington Avenue told police her North Side home was hit by gunfire related to the shooting, and a man on Bissell Avenue told police his car was damaged by gunfire.

Angela Mbengue, 41, of Greeley Lane has been released from the Mahoning County jail and placed on electronically monitored house arrest after police say she stabbed her 34-year-old live-in boyfriend with a steak knife Sunday. Mbengue has been charged with felonious assault.

According to police reports, the boyfriend said Mbengue became angry when he went to a nearby store, thinking he was with another woman. The couple argued, and Mbengue reportedly grabbed the steak knife, swinging it at the man and cutting him on the arm.

The boyfriend refused to go to the hospital and was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.

Police have little information about the stabbing of a 33-year-old Himrod Avenue man Sunday afternoon. The man was taken to St. Elizabeth’s. He was in surgery and unable to speak with officers after the stabbing.

The man’s girlfriend told police he called her just after 5 p.m. and asked her to come take him to the hospital. The woman said she found the victim in his car bleeding from the stomach.
