Mahoning treasurer to be chosen Monday
Paul Canter
Kenneth Carano
Dan Yemma
YOUNGSTOWN
Mahoning County Democratic precinct committee members will choose Monday among four candidates to be the next county treasurer.
Also, the 15 precinct committee members from Struthers will decide between two candidates to serve an unexpired council-at-large term at the same meeting.
Tuesday was the deadline to apply for both positions.
No one has filed for the treasurer vacancy since last Wednesday.
The treasurer candidates are:
Dan Yemma, interim treasurer. He was the chief deputy treasurer for four years. He resigned as a Struthers councilman-at-large to take the interim appointment. Under state law, he can’t hold both positions at the same time.
Kenneth A. Carano, former Gov. Ted Strickland’s Mahoning Valley regional director as well as a former Ohio House representative and Austintown trustee. He is the Democratic Party’s executive vice president.
Paul J. Canter, a certified public accountant who works with the state auditor’s office on audits of governmental agencies.
Roxanne DeNiro, a 29-year employee of the treasurer’s office.
Democratic precinct committee members will meet Monday at the Maronite Center in Youngstown to appoint someone to fill the rest of ex-Treasurer Lisa Antonini’s term, which expires in September 2013.
Antonini resigned May 16 after being charged by the federal government with taking and failing to report a $3,000 cash contribution for her 2008 treasurer campaign.
Also Monday, Struthers precinct committee members will vote between two candidates to fill the remainder of Yemma’s councilman-at-large term, which runs through the end of the year.
Those seeking the appointment are:
Carol Crytzer, a Democratic precinct committee member from the city’s 2nd Ward.
William J. Basista, owner of Basista Hauling.
