Scrappers move into first place with victory

ABERDEEN,MD.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored all of their runs in the eighth inning, defeating the Aberdeen Ironbird 4-1 on Saturday night.

The Scrappers (24-18) moved into first place all alone in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League, a half-game ahead of Jamestown.

Aberdeen fell to 13-29, tied with State College for the worst record in the league.

Jake Lowery had three hits, including a double, and a RBI to lead the Scrappers on Saturday.

Jerrud Sabourin added a pair of singles and a RBI for Mahoning Valley.

Glynn Davis led Aberdeen with three singles and his 17th stolen base of the season.

The Scrappers trailed 1-0 going into the eighth inning, but Evan Frazar and Cody Elliott led off the frame with singles.

Tony Wolters then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Aberdeen pitcher Devin Jones tried to throw out Frazar at third, but he uncorked a wild throw that allowed Frazar to score. However, Elliott was thrown out at third base by Aberdeen left fielder Austin Knight.

Jones then threw a wild pitch that advanced Wolters to third, and he scored on Jake Lowery’s single.

After Alex Lavisky flew out, KC Serna singled and Lowery advanced to third. Enrico Jiminez was summoned from the Aberdeen bullpen, and Sabourin greeted him with a run-scoring single. Serna advanced to third on the play and scored on John Barr’s infield single.
