The repaving of North Lima Road will begin in coming days — welcome news to those who travel it.

“I was so happy to hear about the repaving,” said Flo Rance, manager of the Inn at the Green. “The road’s terrible. ... You ruin your car driving over it.”

The Inn at the Green is in between North Lima Road and state Route 170, and Rance said she’s heard plenty of complaints about North Lima Road’s condition.

So has Poland Village Street Commissioner Russell Beatty.

“We’ve had many complaints from residents. Many have asked why we haven’t done a lot of repairing, but it made no sense to repair it when it was going to be ground out,” Beatty said.

The village will pay $21,700 to repave its share of North Lima Road, from state Route 170 to about Ravine Place.

Beatty said the work should start next week, the same time that Mahoning County will begin work on the road from Walker Mill Road to the village limit. Beatty said the village wanted the project to coincide with the county’s work.

Mahoning County Engineer Richard Marsico said Shelly Co. of Thornville, Ohio, will handle the work, which is part of the county’s annual repaving program. This year, the county will repave 11.9 miles of road, and the entire project will cost about $1.2 million this year.

“All of the roads [in the program] should be paved within two months,” Marsico said.

He said the county tries to do eight miles of paving and about five miles of chip-and-seal each year.

Marsico didn’t know off-hand the last time that North Lima Road had been repaved, but said the county ideally would repave roads every 10 to 15 years.

“But with costs now, it’s more like 20 to 25 years,” he said.

The other roads that will see resurfacing work are Glenwood Avenue in Boardman; Leffingwell Road in Canfield Township; Herbert Road in Canfield and Ellsworth townships; Four Mile Run and Ohltown roads in Austintown; Garfield Road in Springfield Township; and Heacock Road and 15th Street in Smith Township.
