The Canfield Christian Church opened its front lawn to host its monthly movie night, showing “The Sand Lot” July 15. Attendees brought their own lawn chairs and blankets and the church provided grilled hot dogs, lemonade, water and popcorn.

A big screen was draped over the church’s sign in front of the church as people gathered around to watch the movie.

According to organizer Brenda Hernan, the movie nights are a community event where everyone is welcome.

“The purpose of the event is for everyone to come together to have fun and enjoy the nice weather. It has the feel of an old-fashioned drive-in,” Hernan said.

The church will show a movie outside at dusk, weather permitting, on the third Friday of each month this summer. The movies start in May and run through October. In August, the feature presentation is “The Chronicles of Narnia” and in September, the feature presentation is “Secretariat.”

“We try to show movies geared toward children in the summer and then in the fall the movies are more adult-oriented, since the kids are back in school,” Hernan said.
