YOUNGSTOWN

Outgoing Mayor Jay Williams will say goodbye to the city with a free event Monday at the Covelli Centre.

Monday is Williams’ official last day as mayor. He is resigning to become the executive director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, effective Aug. 8.

The “Thank You to the Community” event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the city-owned facility. Williams will give his goodbye speech about 5:30 p.m.

Williams plans to express his gratitude to the community for his 51/2 years as mayor at the event.

The event is free and open to the public.

Donations in honor of the event can be made to the Mayor’s Community Foundation, 3768 Castle Court, Youngs-town 44511. The foundation is a charitable fund established by Williams and his wife, Sonja, to provide money to nonprofits focused on children and families in Youngstown.

Also, the Youngstown Warren Black Caucus will honor Williams at its third annual dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at Mr. Anthony’s, 7440 South Ave., Boardman.

Williams will attend the event honoring him as long as he doesn’t have a pressing matter that would keep him away, said Jaladah Aslam, president of the caucus.

Tickets for the semi-formal event are $50 per person or $375 for a table of eight. For information, call 330-519-6492 or 330-727-5758.
