Car fires put out

YOUNGSTOWN

Firefighters extinguished blazes in two cars behind 1017 Bentley Ave. on the city’s East Side at 12:20 a.m. Thursday and referred the matter to the arson investigation unit. The homeowner said his son received a telephone call Wednesday from a man who threatened to burn his car if a debt wasn’t paid. The house and garage suffered minor damage.

Mobile home burns

HOWLAND

Township firefighters battled a blaze at a mobile home at 2691 Ridge Road on Thursday morning, but the structure was deemed a total loss.

When firefighters arrived about 4:30 a.m., they found the structure engulfed, but crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to surrounding residences. Weathersfield and the Youngstown Air Base fire departments assisted. One person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and has been released.

Bank robbed

The Northwest Savings Bank on Main Street was robbed, state police in New Castle report.

Police said a man in his early- to mid-20s about 6 feet tall entered the bank at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and handed the teller a note demanding money.

He did not show a weapon but stole an undetermined amount of money, police said. He was seen driving a burgundy sport-utility vehicle.

Dog contest set

The Lawrence County Treasurer’s annual Canine Idol Contest is beginning.

The winning dog gets its picture on the 2012 Lawrence County dog-license renewal letter.

Send a nonreturnable recent photo, no larger than 3 inches by 4 inches, along with your name, address, phone number and the dog’s name, to Treasurer Richard Rapone, Lawrence County Government Center, 430 Court St., New Castle, PA 16101.

Voting starts Monday and ends Aug. 31. The winners will be announced Sept. 6 and will be awarded a certificate and a gift at the Sept. 13 county commissioners meeting.

Dance scheduled

The Lawrence County Animal Relief Fund will have its second annual Park Dance at the Cascade Park pavilion.

The dance, featuring the Dorals, is from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. next Friday.

Admission is $10 per person and includes coffee and dessert.

People over 21 can bring their own alcoholic beverages.

All proceeds benefit LCARF, which helps homeless, neglected and abused animals.

The legal/legislative policy committees of the Youngstown Board of Education will meet today at 10 a.m. in Board Caucus Room 209 at 20 W. Wood St. to approve revised policies.

Shoe store robbed

BOARDMAN

Police are investigating a Thursday morning robbery at Payless Shoe store on U.S. Route 224.

Police said a man came into the store demanding money before the store opened at 10 a.m. and got away with an undisclosed amount.
