YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County commissioners have awarded a $1,282,617 contract to an Ohio company for repaving of 11.9 miles of county roads this year.

On Thursday, they awarded the contract to the Shelly Co. of Thornville, Ohio, which is about 30 miles east of Columbus.

The award is about 19 percent below the county engineer’s $1,576,334 estimate for the job, which is being paid for by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant and local funds.

All or parts of the following roads will be resurfaced:

Glenwood Avenue in Boardman.

Leffingwell Road in Canfield Township.

Herbert Road in Canfield and Ellsworth townships.

Four Mile Run and Ohltown roads, both in Austintown.

North Lima Road in Poland and Springfield townships.

Garfield Road in Springfield Township.

Heacock Road and 15th Street, both in Smith Township.

This year’s cost works out to $107,783 per mile, compared with $99,077 per mile last year. Only 9.54 miles of county roads were resurfaced in last year’s regular paving program. There are 483 miles of county roads.

When this year’s paving job was advertised, Marilyn Kenner, chief deputy county engineer, said she expected inflationary pressures would likely come from increased prices for diesel fuel and for the oil-based asphalt binder.

Also on Thursday, the commissioners voted to advertise for bids for a 7,560-foot sanitary sewer-line installation that will serve about 50 residents along Riblett Road in Austintown. The project is being funded by a $570,000 Ohio Department of Development grant and by a $492,276 Ohio Public Works Commission loan.
