Vandalism probed

SALEM

Police are asking for the public’s help to determine who defaced Reilly Stadium this week. A school employee found graffiti had been spray-painted sometime early Monday in three areas. It’s believed the damage was done overnight. School officials painted over the brown paint used by vandals.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to the stadium, 491 Reilly Ave., after an anonymous caller reported the vandals were back. The report does not state that additional damage was found. Police Chief R. W. Floor has said he believes the same group of people were at the stadium both nights.

Mega Millions winner

CLEVELAND

The Ohio Lottery says someone who played Mega Millions in Ohio is now $1 million richer.

That’s what a ticket is worth that was sold at a Marc’s supermarket in Niles. The lottery said Wednesday that the ticket for Tuesday’s drawing in the multistate game matched the five regular numbers — without the Mega Ball — and had the correct “Megaplier” number.

Nationwide, no player had the five numbers plus the Mega Ball, the combination needed to award the grand prize estimated at $63 million. The jackpot rolls over to $74 million for the next drawing on Friday.

The winning numbers were: 20, 25, 35, 52 and 55. The Mega Ball number was 10, and the Megaplier was 3.

Charged in robbery

Austintown

A Youngstown man is charged in the robbery of an Austintown gas station.

Police arrested Anthony Strickland, 43, Monday after he was identified as the man who threatened an employee at Certified Oil, 825 N. Canfield Niles Road.

The 24-year-old male employee told police that Strickland entered the store at about 7 p.m. Monday, walked up to the counter, grabbed him and said, “Come here.” The employee said he was pulled around to the customer side of the counter where he managed to push Strickland off of him. He told police he pushed the store’s panic button because he feared Strickland was trying to rob him.

The suspect ran out of the store but was caught a short time later by police, the report said. Officers brought him back to the store, where the employee identified him.

Strickland was arraigned Wednesday in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing at 11 a.m. Aug. 3.
