Fire marshal investigating tire plant blaze

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — A state police fire marshal is investigating a reported explosion and fire at a tire manufacturing plant in western Pennsylvania.

The fire at Specialty Tires of America in Indiana, Pa. was reported about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Trooper Timothy Frew, the fire marshal, says the fire began in an attached building that is used for cold storage. An explosion occurred shortly after the fire was reported.

The fire marshal is still trying to determine the cause of both the fire and the explosion. No employees were hurt, but three firefighters had to be treated for unspecified injuries.

An employee who answered the phone Wednesday morning says the business will be open, but that no company officials were immediately available to comment on the fire.

The plant is about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
