Northern Strut Twirlers take honors in contests

Northern Strut Twirling Teams ended the 16th season with honors. Team members follow: Row 1, Adele Colonna and Madison Svirbly; Row 2: Amanda Bendel, Jessica Yozwiak, Cassidy Oyler, Syrenna Ramahi, Cali Gialousis, Kathryn Rosinski, and Riley Timms; and Row 3: Celia Melillo, Yiannoula Katsadas, Amanda Dicks, Maria Katsadas, Emmy Graffius, Sharon Chaffee, Monica Mattiussi and Madeline Crish. Not pictured are Loni Bowles, Grace Economus, Jessica Bowers Hall, Megan Howard, Tahlor Kimble, Kerry Kingsley, Dina Notareschi, Megan Susko, Alyssa Thomas, Jillian Wollet and Madi Zeckefoose.

The 16th season of the Northern Strut Twirling Teams ended with numerous honors at Marching Auxiliaries competitions, and a number of members earned positions on local collegiate twirling lines and high school majorette and color guard lines.

During the past competition season with Marching Auxiliaries, Northern Strut earned the following: a superior rating, best in class, best choreography, and the Winner’s Circle Cup for its high school/collegiate Team Twirl entry, champion senior duet honors for Kerry Kingsley and Madeline Crish with first runner-up honors to Monica Mattiussi and Dina Notareschi.

Shannon Chaffee earned first runner-up in the senior solo division followed by Kingsley, second runner-up; Jessica Yozwiak, third runner-up; and Notareschi and Kathryn Rosinski tying for fourth runner-up.

In the junior solo twirling division, Mattiussi earned top honors and Crish earned a fourth runner-up placement. In the pre-K division, Adele Colonna took top honors, as did Emmy Graffius in the senior color guard solo division with Rosinski following as a first runner-up.

Crish and Graffius earned Superior I ratings at the national competition in Fort Worth, Texas, and Graffius placed fourth overall in the senior color guard category.

Earning spots on twirling lines at the collegiate level were Meghan Susko, Kent State University Touch of Gold Twirlers; Jillian Wollet, University of Pittsburgh Gold Girls; and Yozwiak, Thiel College Majorettes.

Twirlers selected for area high school positions include Shannon Chaffee and Megan Howard (captain), Boardman Spartan Twirlers; Mattiussi, Cardinal Mooney Twirler; Crish, Celia Melillo and Notreschi, Poland Majorettes; Emily Combs, Amanda Dicks (captain) and Cassidy Oyler, Springfield Majorettes; Cali Gialousis and Rosinski, Ursuline Color Guard; and Graffius and Alyssa Thomas, Western Reserve Color Guard.

Mattiussi, Yozwiak, Graffius, Thomas, Crish and Oyler will be attending the Marching Auxiliaries Summer Camp and Competition, which takes place annually at Ashland University.
