Check-fraud scheme probed at Walmart

Boardman police and Walmart officials are investigating a check-cashing scam.
Samantha N. Buxton, 22, and her sister Stephanie D. Buxton, 21, both of Youngstown, are charged with criminal simulation. They had a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman.
Police said Boardman Walmart loss-prevention officers reported that beginning in June, five fraudulent company checks were returned to the store as non-existing accounts. In each case, Walmart officials said the suspects presented company payment checks and identifications, and payment was given to all of the suspects, according to reports. The investigation is ongoing, said Boardman Detective Greg Stepuk.

Police are investigating reports of gunfire on Glenwood Avenue in the northern part of the township.
Officers were called to a Forest Park Place residence Monday afternoon when the occupant found three shell casings in the driveway, reports state. The occupant said she heard gunshots earlier that day about 3:30 a.m.
Police said when they searched the surrounding area they found a vehicle with five bullet holes in it in the southern part of the parking lot at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave. The person who had been using the vehicle said she had parked it in the lot July 4.
Contracts OK’d for Austintown schools

The Austintown school board voted Tuesday to award a contract to R.T. Vernal Paving Co. Inc. for early site development of a new kindergarten through second-grade primary school and third- through fifth- grade intermediate school. The North Lima company submitted the lowest bid at $2,471,635.33.
National Night Out set at Wick Park
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown will have National Night Out 2011 at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Wick Park on the city’s North Side.
The event will kick off with a parade. Participants are asked to gather at Elm Street and Broadway at 4:30 for the parade.
The parade will travel down Elm Street to Madison Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue, to Park Avenue, to Fifth Avenue, to Broadway, then to Elm Street and into Wick Park.
After the parade, there will be a picnic in the park. Organizers ask that all children be accompanied by an adult.
Reserve sand piles for Sunfest at park

The Mill Creek MetroParks Sunfest is Sunday.
The festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Wick Recreation Area with a putting contest. A late-morning hike begins at 11 a.m.; a sand-sculpture contest is from 1 to 4 p.m.; and from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The Sensations will perform at Judge Morley Pavillion.
