BOOK SALES

Friends of the Warren Library’s annual book sale will be the first weekend in August at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. Hours on Aug. 6 are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Aug. 7, hours are 1 to 3 p.m. The sale will take place on the second floor of the main library in the Thomas Meeting Room and in the adjacent hall and conference room. Cash or checks will be accepted; there will be no credit card sales. The use of electronic scanning devices will not be permitted. The main library will not be open for business during the book sale.

CAR SHOWS

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, is having a car/motorcycle and craft show “Christmas in July” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Preregister a vehicle for $8 by calling 330-318-3610 or register the day of the event for $10. Ten trophies will be awarded for the top cars/bikes. Goodie bags will go to the first 100 entries. The first 50 get a free T-shirt. Also featured will be a basket auction, a 50-50 drawing, numerous giveaways, music and concessions.

CARD, BINGO PARTIES

FESTIVALS/FAIRS

Slovaks of the Mahoning Valley are having a heritage festival from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 14 on the grounds of St. Matthias Church, 915 Cornell St., Youngstown. Admission is free. The event begins with a polka Mass at 11:30 a.m. There will be entertainment by the Eddie Vallus Band, Del Sinchak Orchestra and Living Traditions folk ensemble. Dinners will be served from noon to 3 p.m. inside. Ethnic foods will be served all day outside. Also featured will be a basket auction, a gas card raffle and ethnic displays.

William Penn Fraternal Association is sponsoring its annual end-of-the-summer fest Sept. 17 at Scenic View Park, Rockwood, Pa. The event begins at noon and ends about 6 p.m. In conjunction with this all-day event, the WPA will celebrate its 125th anniversary. A special performance by the RAJKO ensemble from Budapest, Hungary, will be given. A 46-seat bus has been chartered by Youngstown Branch 28 of William Penn. The bus will depart from Boardman Red Lobster at 8 a.m. and arrive back in Youngstown about 10 p.m. The cost for the bus trip is $35 per person, which includes transportation and admission. Berlin Center Historical Society is conducting a community yard sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Maps can be picked up at local businesses.

Immaculate Heart of Mary will have a Treasures in Your Trunk sale, sponsored by its Social Concerns Group, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10. The sale will take place in the church parking lot, 4500 Norquest Blvd., Austintown. Vendor spaces are available for early registration at $10; must be received by Sept. 8. Vendors may register for $15 the day of the sale. No refunds will be given for any reason. Take your own table (up to 8 feet) for setting up in front of your trunk. TRIPS

Butler Institute of American Art has planned a four-day, three-night bus trip to Chicago from Oct. 27 through 30. Participants will stay at The Palmer House, located in the heart of the city, nicknamed “The Loop.” The hotel is within walking distance to Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile shopping district, The Art Institute of Chicago, the theater district and more. The tour will include a visit to the residence and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) and several of the prairie-style residences that he designed, and stops at the Madron Gallery and The Art Institute. E.B. Family Life Center is sponsoring a bus trip to Detroit on Aug. 20 to attend the 29th annual African Festival in the Phillip Hart Plaza. The bus will leave at 7:30 a.m. from the center, 7 S. St. Paul Church, 350 S. Union Ave., Salem, will sponsor a Sept. 10 bus tour to “Little Italy” in Pittsburgh for a the two-hour walking tour. Participants will visit the area’s Italian eateries, and time for shopping in the area follows the tour. The cost is $60, due by Aug. 1. The trip is limited to the first 40 registrants. Trumbull County Travel Club is sponsoring a two-day, one-night excursion to Shipshewana, Ind., Aug. 12 and 13. The tour includes lodging at Das Dutch Essenhaus, a lunch stop at the Davis Mercantile Complex, shopping at Lolly’s and Yoder’s fabric stores, dinner, the show “Ring of Fire,” a tour of the Heritage Trail Gardens and a mystery stop on the way home. The cost is $299 per person. A one-day outing is planned for Aug. 26 to the Gateway Clipper’s cruise and the Rivers Casino. The luncheon cruise theme will be “A Tribute to Patsy Cline,” with docking at the casino in the early afternoon. Youngstown Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Epsilon Mu Omega and Delta Delta are sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C., Aug. 27-28 to the dedication ceremony of Martin Luther King Jr.’s National Memorial. The bus will depart at 7 a.m. Aug. 27 from McDonald’s on Belmont Avenue and will depart Washington for Youngstown at 4 p.m. Aug. 28.
