Scrappers shut out by Hudson Valley
Staff report
FISHKILL, N.Y.
The Hudson Valley Renegades pounced on Will Roberts for five runs in the first inning of Sunday’s 6-0 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Roberts, the Cleveland Indians’ fifth-round pick in June’s Major League Baseball draft, faced eight batters in the opening frame.
Jeff Main hit a three-run homer while Craige Lyerly hit a RBI triple.
Roberts then pitched three scoreless innings before being relieved in the fifth inning.
Three Renegades pitchers combined to toss a three-hitter. Evan Frazar, Alex Lavisky and Jordan Smith singled for the Scrappers (21-16).
The defeat combined with Jamestown’s 3-1 victory over Vermont has the Jammers and Scrappers tied for first place in the New York-Penn League’s Pinckney Division standings.
After tonight’s game against Hudson Valley, the Scrappers will have an off-day on Tuesday then open a series against the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday at Eastwood Field. Canfield High graduate Drew Turocy is an outfielder for the Spinners, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
