Dr. Rick Flanders will speak on the subject of revival during regular services at 10 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 31 at Gospel Baptist Church, 6235 Clingan Road.

Flanders served as the senior pastor of Juniata Baptist Church in Tuscola County, Michigan, from 1973-2007. During his ministry, the church operated a Christian school, conducted evangelistic efforts, maintained a growing missions program, sponsored a weekly radio broadcast and engaged in special ministries to correctional facilities and other residential institutions.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Bob Jones University in 1969, and completed the master of arts program at the graduate school there. In 1988, Pensacola Christian College conferred upon him the honorary degree of doctor of divinity.

He has written articles on a variety of subjects that have been published in local and national periodicals, including the Detroit News, the Sword of the Lord, Frontline, Maranatha, Christian View of the News, Church Bus News, Pulpit Helps, Revival Magazine and Preach the Word.

He is the author of “Back to Normal,” which focuses on revival, and a booklet on holiness in the church entitled “Blended Worship.”

Concert at church

Beloit Friends Church, 18042 Fifth St., will host a concert at 6 p.m. July 31 featuring the Hallmark Quartet of Ironton, Ohio.

The group, which has been performing for a dozen years, sings a Southern gospel style of music. The group has recorded several CDs, which will also be for sale.

An offering will be taken.

The Rev. Gregory Maturi, pastor of St. Dominic Church in Youngstown, will speak on “Faith and the Urban Experience” on Aug. 1 at The Manor, 3104 S. Canfield-Niles Road.

The event is a “Dinner and Doctrine” presentation, a cooperative effort of Youngstown-area parishes to provide faith formation for adults.

The evening will begin at 5:45 p.m. for happy hour and dinner (order and pay on your own from a limited menu). Father Maturi will speak at 7.

There is no fee.

Novena to St. Therese

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church, 252 E.Wood St., will conduct a novena to St. Therese starting Aug. 4 and concluding Sept. 29.

The services will start at 5:30 p.m.

St. Therese is known as the “Little Flower.”

St. Therese religious articles will be available.

Serbian picnic

The 79th annual Serbian Day picnic will be Sunday at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, 53 Laird Ave.

The day will begin with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. celebrated by the Very Rev. Stavrophor John Rajlich, parish priest, and assisted by Proto Deacon Milan Medakovich. Responses will be sung by the Holy Trinity Choir.

After the service, traditional foods will be available for sale in the Serbian Hall and on the church grounds. Tamburitzan music will be featured.

Admission is $3.

Ancient rituals

The Rev. Andrew Gromm, pastor of St.Michael Orthodox Church, 127 Steel St., conducts a weekly lesson at 6 p.m. Thursdays on ancient rituals of the church.

The same lesson is offered at 4 p.m. Fridays.

Lessons will focus on the liturgy’s origins from the first to fourth centuries, but also beyond this era.

Father Gromm also preaches the gospel and church history at noon Saturdays on WSOM, AM 600 on the show, “On Earth As In Heaven.”

Family fun day

Guest speaker will be Pastor Stafford Jackson of A Heavenly Place Church of God in Christ.

Destiny International with Wayman Thomas, pastor, will present ”Taking Our City Back,” an outdoor, neighborhood Gospel party, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the corner of Market and Midlothian streets.

The event will feature a giveaway of school supplies and backpacks.

There will be free food along with games and prizes.

A one-hour youth party will be at 5.

Shaback, international gospel ensemble from the Bahamas, will entertain.
