Car runs over, kills peregrine falcon chick on Market St.

YOUNGSTOWN

Jurist, one of three peregrine falcon chicks that hatched last month from a fourth-floor nest at the Mahoning County Courthouse, has been run over and killed by a motor vehicle.

The female peregrine was found dead late Thursday afternoon on the Market Street Bridge by Kathy M. Zook of Mecca, a birdwatcher who frequently observes the raptors here.

The two surviving falcon chicks from that nest, a female named Magistrate, and a male named Marshal, frequent the Ohio One Building, Zook said.

The chicks’ mother, Stellar, who was estimated to be about 9 years old, died Tuesday morning after having been found in poor condition with an injured leg late Monday afternoon in the police parking compound under the Market Street Bridge.

The chicks’ father, Stammy, has been feeding the young birds and teaching them to hunt for themselves, Zook said.

Stammy is named for the Stambaugh Building, where he and Stellar had nested for several years.
