The Canfield High School girls volleyball teams, along with girls varsity volleyball coach and C.H. Campbell gym teacher Ronie Haurin and junior varsity coach Stacie Mang, offered a volleyball camp for girls from grades 3 through 7 July 5-7 at the high school.

The 90 registered campers were taught basic skills, the rules of the game and conditioning skills the volleyball teams use to build muscle by approximately 20 high school team members. Campers also participated in skill competitions and games.

Helpers from the eighth grade team, ninth-grade team, the junior varsity team and the varsity team were in leadership roles and were able to share what they have learned with the campers.

“Not only does this camp give the members of the Canfield volleyball teams a chance to be in leadership roles, it also builds team camaraderie. The younger girls also enjoy playing with the older girls and getting to know them,” Haurin said.

Campers were divided into groups by grades and the volleyball team members performed demonstrations for the campers to show them how to apply the skills they were learning.

On the last day of the camp, names were randomly drawn for campers to win prizes, which included T-shirts, jump ropes, hackey sacks, notepads and volleyball pencils.

To close the camp, each group performed a volleyball cheer or rap they had prepared for the other campers.

“This has been a super fun week for all of us,” Haurin said as she addressed the girls at the end of camp. “We would like all of you to come to a high school game. You can cheer on the Lady Cards and it’s a good way to learn the game.”

The camp is a fundraiser for the girls volleyball program and helps pay for several of the program’s needs, including a camp for the high school players.
