Spaghetti dinner helps cancer patient

The Knights of Columbus, Council No. 3930, are sponsoring a benefit spaghetti dinner Sunday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, 4500 Norquest Blvd., Austintown from noon to 5 p.m.

All dinners include spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, bread, butter, dessert and beverage. Cost is $6.50 for adults, Children 6-9 eat for $3.50 and children under 6 eat free. Take-outs are available.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes.

This benefit will help a family of a parishioner who has been off work and receiving treatment for cancer.

Immaculate Heart Fun Run correction

On June 9, Immaculate Heart Church hosted a Fun Run in conjunction with its parish festival. For eight years, the Fun Run was organized by Parish member Pat Malandra, and Robert Klempay has planned the event for the last two years in honor of Malandra.

This is a correction from information printed in our July 16 edition. Malandra was quoted as the current organizer, although Klempay is now responsible for the event. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Vendors wanted for craft sale in Boardman

All types of vendors, farmers, crafters, concessions, individuals or organizations can participate in the upcoming flea market and craft show at the Shepherd Event Center, 7469 South Ave. in Boardman. The event is July 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New gourmet eatery now open in Boardman

Bella’s To-Go, a quick-serve gourmet cuisine eatery and catering service, has opened at 400 Boardman-Poland Road, across from the Shops at Boardman Park, near Sprint and the new Plato’s Closet.

The eatery offers a range of healthful and delicious choices. On the light side, there are seasonal soups, unusual wraps, bold salads, stuffed burgers and exotic pizzas. Entr e selections include chicken francaise, veal marsala and filet tenderloin with an array of side dishes that change daily.

Marine Corps reunion set for Aug. 13

The Tri-State Marine Detachment No. 494 of the Marine Corps League will host the 32nd annual Marine Corps Reunion Aug. 13 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown.The event is open to all Marines past and present, plus friends and their quests.

The festivities will begin with refreshments at 6 p.m. Dinner will begin at 7, followed by the speaker, music and dancing and will last until midnight. The speaker was assigned by the United States Marine Corps, Commandant’s office and will be Lt. Col. Joseph Raftery, a Philadelphia native and a graduate of Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

The evening will also include, door prizes, Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Free membership for military families

Curves Austintown is offering free six-month memberships to wives and teenage daughters of actively-deployed reservists and National Guard members.

Surviving wives and teenage daughters will also be offered six months free memberships.

Discounts to other immediate family members will also be offered, but documentation will be required.

Superhero hike planned

Learn how the superheroes of Earth – pollinators – impact lives tomorrow at 2 p.m. during a moderately-difficult, one-mile hike.

Hikers will meet at the Calvary Run parking lot.

Become an “official” pirate at the library

Children of all ages can join the Austintown branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s global pirate crew Tuesday at 11 a.m. The event will feature pirate stories, crafts and tattoos.

Children can make a craft to take home and tractor rides leave every half hour July 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at MetroParks Farm.

Last chance for summer reading fun

Songs and sound from around the world will highlight the final reading event of the summer at the Austintown library on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. The event is for children of all ages. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Enjoy a tractor-wagon ride and guided tour of MetroPark Farm every Thursday in July at 10 a.m.

Families can visit the animals and learn in the playroom.

Duzzny receives award

Austintown resident Walter Duzzny was awarded a 10-year service award pin from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve State Chairman John Hopper during the annual Department of Defense sponsored meeting and awards dinner in Columbus.

Duzzny is a retired Army Reserve Colonel and former emergency management director. He serves as the public affairs officer for the East Region.

Italian Fest set for July

The Italian Fest is set for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown.

Festivities will begin Friday at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies, followed by the Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant at 7 p.m. The Miss Italian Youngstown beauty and talent pageant has become a tradition at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest. The pageant includes modeling, speaking about Italian heritage and performing a talent. There will be continuous entertainment and fun activities, including Morra and a pasta eating contest. A little King and Queen will also be crowned.

Host families needed for international students

Five international students coming to the Youngstown area this August through Educatius International and attending Ursuline High School are in need of families to host them.

Host families can be from anywhere in the area and have few requirements. The students need a bed, desk and dresser. The students also need a ride to Ursuline, which can be via school bus or by car. Host families provide the students with daily meals and give them a loving and caring environment.

Educatius offers a monthly stipend to offset additional costs. The international students are expected to pay for all their expenses outside of the house (school lunches, restaurants, movies, presents, prom expenses etc.). Having an international student is a great way to learn about the world around you and even share your own culture.

Anyone interested in hosting one of these international students can contact a local Educatius International Coordinator at 330-770-5714.

Cast a garden ornament

Pam Baytos will teach participants how to cast a staddle stone Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Quaker Steak hosts swimsuit contest

Quaker Steak & Lube Æ in Austintown is hosting its first Swim Suit USA International Model Search, Promoting Healthy Lifestyles. Women can put on their best tasteful swim and night wear and win prizes, including cash and a trip to Las Vegas representing the state of Ohio.

The competition will consist of preliminary rounds today and July 30 starting at 8 p.m. with a different panel of judges each week. The final round will be Aug. 6. During the final round, most of the judges from the previous weeks will come back to select a lady from the Austintown Quaker Steak & Lube Æ to move on to Canton and maybe ultimately, Las Vegas.

Daughters Revolution elects new officers

The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met June 13 at Ala Cart Catering in Canfield for the special purpose of installing new officers for the 2011-2013 term of office.

The new officers elected May 9 are Regent: Mary Altiere, Vice Regent: Milly Lumley, Chaplain: Priscilla Sutton, Recording Secretary: Rolayne Kasmer, Corresponding Secretary: Barbara Parker, Treasurer: Frances Stoner, Registrar: Nancy Lewis, Librarian/Historian: Bonnie Casto and Board members: Carol Tallman, Sarah Reynolds and Mary Lou Shively.

The chapter meets the second Monday of each month except in January, July and August.

The next meeting will be Sept. 12 at Ala Cart Catering at noon.

Players perform Shakespeare in the park

The Mahoning Valley Players will perform Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” Friday and Saturday at the Judge Morley Pavilion at 6 p.m.

The free performance is a romantic comedy with star-crossed lovers, mistaken identity and happy ending. Lawn seating is available, bring a chair or blanket.
