Applewood swimmers beat Poland, shine at YSL relays

The Applewood swim team earned its third victory of the season with a 297-203 win over Poland on July 13. Because of weather-related issues the past two summers, this was the first time since 2008 that the teams have faced each other in a full meet.
The Applewood girls team tied Poland, while the boys squad won. The 15 and over boys swept all the individual events, as well as taking both relays.
Poland swimmer Lucy Graziano tied the Applewood pool record in the 8 and Under breaststroke. Poland’s Gina Ungaro broke a pool record in the 11-12 girls freestyle. She broke the mark that had stood since 1977, winning in a time of 26.46.
The triple winners for Applewood were Mia Bruno, Mario Ricciardi, Colleen Manning, Cristina LaRocca, Allison Janak, David Zaitzew and Ali Azeem. Winning two events each for Applewood were Mark Ricciardi, Ivan Bosnjak, Austin Price, Kyle McEvey, Megan Werth, Mia Stana, C.J. Cordon, Tyler Calpin, Mike Henson and Steven Moss.
Applewood also competed in the Youngstown Swim League Relay Meet, sponsored by the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club, on July 9. This is a meet that consists of only relays. There are different events than a traditional meet and some events combine boys and girls. Parents and coaches are also eligible to participate in the meet.
Applewood swimmers won six races to set meet records. In the coaches relay, Mark Brooks, Kelley Manning and Ryan Mitchell came in first while setting a meet record.
